Whether you recently recieved your refund, still waiting for it or yet to file (like me), be smart on how you use it. We meet with families on a daily basis and financial issues are always on the top of priorities to work on. We here at Family Strengthening Network came up with a top 5 smart ways to spend your tax refund that reflect what we share with our families that we work with.

  1. Create an emergency fund.
  2. Pay off debt.
  3. Put money towards your retirement fund.
  4. Have fun! Experts have said it’s ok to spend 10-25% of your refund for fun. Quality family time is just as important as saving your money. Use the remainder of your refund towards any of the other 4 ways listed.
  5. Opportunity Fund. Save at least 20% for long term purchase like home,  going back to school or a vacation, etc. Use the remainder of your refund towards any of the other 4 ways listed above.

The links will bring you to Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University pages that talk more in details about each way. We do occasionally offer Financial Peace University (FPU) workshops, which is a great way to learn how to budget and save your money wisely. Feel free to contact us at riccina@unitedadvocacygroup.org if interested in attending one of our future FPU workshops. Hope to hear from you!
