The Christmas season is one of the busiest times of the year, but you still want to set aside some time to spend with what matters most: your family. There is the usual decorating the Christmas tree or baking gingerbread cookies, but what if your family is looking for something extra fun to do this season? To help contribute to your Christmas cheer, we have put together a list of 5 fun holiday activities that everyone in the family is sure to enjoy.
Catch up on your holiday classics each night with the family until Santa finally makes his annual journey down the chimney. Take a trip to the library and gather up all of your Christmas favorites or save these timeless tales in a special place, specifically for the holiday season. We can already see you cozying up as a family to read How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the popular tween/teen novel The Best Christmas Pageant Ever or of last but not least, The Night Before Christmas. If your children are just learning how to read, let them kick-off your Christmas family read-a-thon, but make sure that everyone has a turn throughout the month to pick the book of their choice and a chance to read aloud!

Giving back, as a family
There are many different ways that you and your family can give back this holiday season. Check out NJ Food Bank Directory and click on your city’s name to find your local food pantry and soup kitchens in New Jersey. But volunteering during the holidays doesn’t have to solely mean helping out in a soup kitchen — your family can donate toys or gently used clothing, help package and organize food in a local food bank, buy Christmas presents for needy children and much, much more. Contact our friends at Operation South Jersey, to learn how you can help families in need this holiday.
Ice skating is epitome of winter fun! Whether you take a trip to NYC, Philly or stay in New Jersey, there are plenty of ice skating rinks to visit and to enjoy with your family. View this New Jersey rink list I found.
Get creative with your family! You can find the gingerbread house kits basically anywhere. You can find them at Walmart, Target, Michaels, etc. I bought mine at Michaels using a 40% coupon on their app. Though you don’t have to buy the kits to build “gingerbread” houses, I’ve used graham crackers, royal icing and candy to decorate. Don’t be afraid to get creative and make something besides a house and add another level to the fun by having a friendly competition on who made the best creation!
Christmas Movie Marathon
Take one Saturday or Sunday and binge watch all the classic as a family. We love watching The Grinch, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph, Little Drummer Boy, It’s a White Christmas, Home Alone, Santa Claus is Coming to Town…to name a few. What are your favorites? Don’t forget the hot cocoa with marshmallows and the popcorn! Make extra popcorn and buy cranberries to string the popcorn and cranberries to make garland.
